SSE is set to supply Arriva UK with SSE Green to power it’s UK bus and rail sites. The announcement this week marks a significant commitment by one of Europe’s leading transport providers to decarbonise the sector.
Offered by SSE Business Energy, SSE Green is a 100% renewable electricity and allows business to report zero emissions for their Scope 2 emissions under the GHG Protocol Corporate Standards. SSE Green has been independently verified and assured by Carbon Clear, as a CDP Accredited Provider of carbon, energy management and sustainability services.
The three-year deal will cover UK Bus, Arriva Rail North and Chiltern Railways and supply electricity assured by Renewable Electricity Guarantee of Origins (REGOs) certifying that the electricity has been generated exclusively through a portfolio of wind and hydro assets.
Mark Chadwick from Carbon Clear said: ‘Businesses want to buy renewable electricity as part of their environmental strategies and to allow them to report zero emissions. To do this they must provide proof. The verification and assurance of SSE Green provides businesses with confidence that electricity purchased is generated by renewable energy sources.’
The new contract will enable Arriva to report zero carbon emission electricity and prevent an estimated 27,000 tones of CO2e from entering the atmosphere each year. According to SSE this is equivalent to powering almost 25,000 homes with green electricity or taking almost 95 million miles drive by the average car off the road.
The move is hoped to encourage others in the transport sector to follow their lead and choose the renewable road. SSE Green is offered to businesses of all shapes and sizes so it’s a path open to all businesses committed to a zero-carbon future.
