Ovaan Cleaner Cookstoves Project

Location: India
Around 300,000 cleaner cookstoves have already been distributed by this carbon offsetting project with the aim of alleviating the burden on India’s forestry.

Project Summary.

More than 60% of the population of India uses firewood for cooking. That is 170 million families who depend on a quickly depleting resource. People would often walk an average of 3 hours a day to collect it or spend a third of their annual income to obtain it.

This project disseminates cleaner, more efficient stoves which consume considerably less wood to help solve these problems. The cookstoves are durable, affordable, clean energy stoves that help families to breath healthier air, spend less time and money on cooking fuel, place smaller demand on forests and emit fewer greenhouse gases.

Certified under

Aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals

SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

At least 2 billion people in the world are exposed to indoor smoke which has huge impacts on respiratory health. The cleaner stoves reduce smoke indoors by 60% which has positive impacts on the health of families, particularly women and children.

SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

The project provides poor families with the ability to obtain a more affordable and more sustainable means of cooking in their home to reduce the unsustainable burden on India’s forests.

SDG 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems

With a 60% reduction in the amount of firewood needed by the new stoves, approximately 1.8 million trees have been saved, helping to preserve precious forest habitat for native species.

The results

  • The improved stoves are reducing smoke and toxic emissions in homes by up to 80%
  • Carbon credits partially subsidise the cost of the stoves to make the stoves more affordable for families.
  • Less time and money are spent obtaining firewood as the stoves use 60% less wood.
  • Around 1.8 million trees have been saved by the project.
  • The project is creating local jobs, improving the economy and fostering entrepreneurship to deliver clean cooking technology to those who are most in need.
